General consequences/benefits of pledging to another ruler? Does it hinder you from starting your own kingdom?

Super new, and current have about 13 hours under my belt of crushing bandits and tournaments with my merry band of 50 men.

Currently my clan level is at 2 and I'm running around the map chasing down the 10 nobles. I know you can 'become a vassal' at clan level 3.. is that the same as pledging loyalty? Should I avoid it all if I want to start my own kingdom? Should I just pick a small town, take it over, and expand from there?

I get that all of these are probably 'possible' though I know I would get smoked real quick if I occupied a town
