Long story short - I'm in the Chicago area, was unemployed for about 16 months and racked up about $75k in debt between credit cards and ill-advised personal loans. I didn't tell my wife I was doing this, I told her everything was fine and I was managing the money. Bad idea, we've worked through it, not here to relitigate that.Got a new job and the income is good but only about 75% of what I made previously. Anyways, long story short, I have a few written-off cards and two personal loans sent to collections. I am just starting to explore options for how to handle this and don't even know where to start. My primary concern is insulating my wife from any issues as she is not "on" any of this debt. Any advice is appreciated.
I currently make about 150k, my wife makes 90k, and the debt breaks out to the following:
- Chase card 30k - written off, served with lawsuit for July 2024
- Chase card 20k - written off, still in their last stages of collection before going to law firm
- Capital one 12k - written off, collections
- Bestegg 20k personal loans - still in collections
- Amex - $2000 - payment plan on target
- Chase card 8k - payment plan on target
- credit union line of credit 10k - in good standing
- credit union CC 6k - in good standing
- discover card $400 - in good standing
- IRS - 70k of arrears that IS mostly hers, this is the one area our finances have commingled.
