Citizens Bank holding $5k check

Post Body

So my grandmother passed away a few months back, my dad decided to give my brother and I a part of his inheritance. He gave us each a $5k check. My brother cashed his to his bank, it cleared and was available for use the same day.

I bank with Citizens Bank, they put a one day hold on itā€¦ thenā€¦ in the middle of that one day, they added a second hold to it. I call and ask why thereā€™s two holds, they tell me ā€œitā€™s a law from the government, the federal government is holding it until the 18th to protect you and the check writer.ā€ I asked them what lawā€¦ the guy couldnā€™t tell meā€¦ he just keeps repeating himself, ā€œitā€™s a law from the government, the federal government says we have to hold it.ā€ Over and over and over until I just hung up.

Basically Iā€™m just confused why Iā€™m being treated like a criminal, whereas my brother got his money right away. I deposited my check on Wednesday evening. It cleared my dadā€™s account on Thursday morning. I have a job working for state government, and my account gets regular direct deposits, and those even get deposited one to two days early!!! I have yet to have an overdraft on this account. My car payment is directly tied to this account as well, and I have never missed a payment. They insist on holding my check ā€œbecause the government told us we have to.ā€ Yet my brotherā€¦. who works at a bar, and gets more sporadic payā€¦ no problem, hereā€™s your money.

All I know is, Iā€™m very glad that I wasnā€™t depending on this money for anythingā€¦ šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

Sorry, just ranting.

I had this exact same thing happen with my paycheck ($4193.40). Bank originally refused the direct deposit so my employer sent me a paper check. I tried to cash the paper check and they put a hold on it telling me that the funds would be available after 10 business days. I called member services and escalated until I got ahold of someone and they were able to help push things through.
