Col. Sink is the worst officer of the 506th. I don't know if it's because of how Ambrose has written him or how Dye portrays him, but every time I watch BoB I despise him a little bit more.
Sobel gets done relatively dirty by the show and so apparently is Dyke. But it seems that Sink is blissfully unaware of just how bad his sub-commanders are until he's slapped in the face with the facts. He is never around when shit hits the fan and seems to just turn up in nice clean uniforms and warm kit, drop bad news and then saunters off back to wherever it is he works, awaiting results.
During the sergeants mutiny, the sort of middling response to it seems to be more out of spite that he had to be told how bad Sobel was performing (despite every exercise being scored by umpires, so he should know exactly how badly Easy were doing during pre-deployment in England). Either he should have hammered his NCOs because they're talking shit or thanked them for doing their jobs for their men and moved Sobel on.
Or maybe even had a word with Sobel himself before it got that far...?
Turning up to Bastogne in nice and shiny warm clothes? "Where'd you get that jacket from sir? Didn't feel like bringing up any more for your men?"
And don't even get me started about sending the lads back over the river for more prisoners on the second night.
Whoever the senior NCO was in the 506th (whatever their equivalent to the RSM is) should've respectively told him to stick his head in a bin and headbutt the wall a few times. "No sir, they're not going out to the same place at the same time the following night to do the same task they barely got away with the night before, simply because it makes you look good."
I mean it's not like Sink is written to do a lot in the show. He shows up when needed to move the plot along or provide exposition. The show didn't need to cut to a side plot of him doing stuff to validate why he has his rank.
