I have an X1C with AMS. And I was trying to make a version of this radius gauge from printables with the AMS. Now it has inset text so I figured I would try to highlight it by using green PLA filament for the body and white PLA filament for the fill of that inset.
Since I knew this text was tiny and I would need any extra precision I could get I switched to my 0.2mm nozzle and set layer height to 0.06mm. I used the paint tool to paint the inside and in the slicer it looked like this:
I tried printing it twice once by using layer height in the slicer to get that color and the second time using the surface paint fill.
Both times I got subpar results.
For scale that top semicircle is a 4mm diameter (2mm radius) semicircle.
You can barely see the white in most lighting and there's this odd surface pattern surrounding the top of the text.
Now I realize now why extruded text would be preferable in most cases because it's just going to be easier to read and will avoid needing too many color switches. But if I were to do engraved letters again how can I improve this result? Is it so dim because the slicer only put one thin layer of white filament there? If so how could I get it to add more? Is there a slicer setting where I can expand the hole of the letters just a smidge?
Basically what would you do to get better results. Should something be calibrated? Can I tweak something in the slicer?
If this were a bigger print and I saw that pattern I would assume I need to do flow calibration. But given this photo is so zoomed in thats alright right?
Also if you know good tutorial videos that touch on these things send them my way too.
An additional question is. (And please ignore this awful slice I am showing you that I made just to illustrate) shouldn't it be possible to avoid color switches without making the whole layer white? Can the printer not realize that there is an island of white in the middle of a layer of green and just sort of tip toe over a bit of wall to do the minimal amount of color switching? What is the limit of the wall height where it can still do that?
