This act 2 fight didn't trigger?

So I've never beaten the game, due to me keeping restarting, but I've been to avt 2 a few times. I've always had the Marcus fight and saved Isobel, but last night, on a playthrough with a friend on his first time playing, it never happened. I realized this when as we saved and got off for the night before for the final assault on Moonrise. We didn't explore much before going to Last Light Inn when we got to act 2 and talked to Jaheira and Isobel, so I have no idea why the game skipped the battle. Was this a bug?
