Dual Screen on PC

Trying to do split screen on pc with my girlfriend. Some places say you can do one controller with mouse and keyboard, some say you can only use two controllers. Im basically trying to figure out which is true. I dont mind buying a new controller for this if I need to, but Im thoroughly lost on how to do split screen right now, and it keeps switching between controller and keyboard control. Anyone have insight on this or any experience doing couch co-op that might prove useful?
