Pruning in June vs winter

I have a pear espalier tree that is quite old and a little out of shape. I would like to keep the tree tightly trimmed to the espalier shape.
I just read something that says that if you prune in June, you'll keep your tree smaller, but if you prune over winter, it encourages growth. What does reddit have to say about this?
