declarative backup software?
Post Body

I have been researching various backup softwares for a few months now and have not found what I am looking for.

My problem with most backup solutions is the imperative way in which you must define your backups. For example: I must tell the backup program "back up folder X to location Y nightly".

What I am looking for is a declarative-style solution. Such a program might allow me to input my resources (cloud accounts, other computers, backup disks), files in need of backing up, and preferences - then figure out a reasonable backup plan.

Does such a thing exist? If not, where should I start if I wanted to create such a thing (for linux and preferably in python)? I already have a clumsy start as a little script that dynamically creates cronjobs using rclone but I can't be the only one who thinks this way, right?
