Freezing water and the shitty quality waterers
Post Body

So once AGAIN this year, it got cold. The water tray froze in the hanging poultry drinker. I went to shake it to break up the ice and of course the hanging part broke off. Now it has a hole in the top and is useless. Another $30 in the toilet.

My scenario:

  1. Chickens spend 80% of their time in the enclosed coop/run.
  2. If I leave them a bowl of water they get it filthy and/or spill it. This happens even if I elevate the bowl.
  3. I REALLY would like a long term water solution so I don't have to change it daily.
  4. Metal hanging drinkers are OK I suppose but I can't see a water level from the house. Honestly this might be my only solution though unless someone has a better one.
  5. NO electricity is in the coop and running cords is not feasible.

Is there any hanging drinkers that are not made of shit plastic that breaks when it gets below freezing for a few hours? We live in TN so this is not like NY winters. And yet here we are. I am tired of setting $30 on fire once a year.
