My husband gets 8 weeks paid paternal leave from his PhD but is planning on not taking it.

Post Body

This will be our first child and we live out of state with no family or friends anywhere nearby. Iā€™m taking 12 weeks unpaid maternity leave. His reasoning is that the sooner he gets his PhD, the sooner he can make enough money to support us again (currently Iā€™m the breadwinner which is extremely stressful to me). I get that but I also feel like he may be underestimating how hard it is having an infant. He has acknowledged if I have a c-section he may need to be home for a period of time while I recover but besides that he wants to keep working on his project so he can get done sooner. Just looking for others thoughts and experiences with this.

My husband took off two days and then had his weekend, going back to work when our first child was five days old. Honestly, it was harder on him than on me. Newborns are easy and without having another adult in the house, baby and I could just sleep most of the day instead of me staying awake to chat with him.
