Post Body

I made this post earlier this year and wanted to give feedback https://www.reddit.com/r/BSA/comments/1am4rwj/zeffy_to_take_payments/

As the treasurer I took the idea of new digital payments to the pack committee. Everyone was good with finding a way to modernize payments. I setup a bank-provided system that ended up having a big problem in design and we have never used it. We looked at the big names everyone uses like PayPal, Venmo, CashApp.

Several adults did their own research on the topic and we settled on using Zeffy.

Pros:

  • We're using a legitimate non-profit system rather than a personal account
  • We get the net amount that the person chooses to pay because the fee is added on top of that
  • I like that it has a variety of purchasing options such as a way to fundraise online or setup a mini-store.
  • No manual bank deposit
  • People can change the fee amount
  • Multiple logins available
  • Custom fields to track who a payment is for
  • Works any time of the day

Cons

  • It can take a week and a half for them to initiate pay out at the fastest. This one is fine because I don't have to go to the bank.
  • The default fee is high and by design you can't choose the default percentage. It's easy to forget to change it if you want to.
  • No installment payments (yet). We want people to be able to pay their camp fees automatically across several months, for example.
  • Limited customization

We haven't taken as much money this fall, with the shift to online payment with national it's mainly being used for pack dues. I setup our fall fundraiser in it and have had a couple families use it so far.

Overall I'm happy with it. The general approach is solving a lot of problems. With how many families hate paying extra fees we needed a payment system that met everyone's expectations without 80% handing me a check.

I expect our Square account largely gets abandoned at this point.

I did setup PayPal to reimburse people but not take money. Not sure it's going to handle 100% of this area but we needed something. So far looking good as well.
