Battery Temp Mgt in HOT Garage
Post Body

I bought a used i3 here in VERY hot Phoenix, AZ. I have solar on my home so it made sense to give an electric car a try since I literally don't have an electric bill, and a used i3 wouldn't break the bank.

Anyways, I plug it in at night to my regular outlet in my garage. From what I understand there is an automatic battery temperature management system to keep the battery cool while charging. I can hear it when it kicks in (heard it the first time when I was at the dealership and they had it plugged in to a fast charger). I can also feel the heat coming out from underneath the vehicle when that battery fan is on.

The problem is that in Phoenix, in the summer, it's hot and it's REALLY hot in the garage where I'm charging it, like over 100 degrees. There's no AC in there like the rest of the house obviously.

So what's happening is I plug the vehicle in, and sometimes right away the fan kicks in, and I feel the heat pour out from under the car, and then begins this vicious cycle of an enclosed garage, already hot, with a car battery fan kicking in, feeding even more heat into the garage. The garage literally turns into an oven, and the speed at which that car charges is abysmal. The fan does go out for a while, but then I'll peak in the garage a little later and the fan is up and running once again. It does this all night...on - off - on - off.

I'm trying to figure out a solution to this and I'm coming up empty. If I can't figure it out I'm probably going to return the car.

Any suggestions? Thanks,
