Question for those who have high milage BMWs

Alright so I am in the market for my first car and I'm looking at a whole bunch of makers and models. I keep hearing this stereotype that BMWs with high milages have TERRIBLE maintenance and shit just gets super expensive to the point where it isn't worth it anymore. So I'm just trying to figure out if that is true and if anyone can guide me on what to look for in a high milage german car.
