Looking to buy a used 1 Series F20/F21?

Hello. As the title says. I'm from the UK & looking to buy a used 1 Series from 2011 onwards.
Is there anything I need to look out for? Which is the best model? Should I go for Diesel or Petrol? I currently have Seat Leon FR diesel & I love the economy but didn't love the DPF issues. Are the Diesels prone to DPF issues? What type of millage do the CAM belts/chains need changing? Looking forward to any replies. Thanks.
