Can M40B18 engine be coupled with an automatic gearbox? Would it mean anything?

My E34 has M40B18 engine and as you know it's pretty economical fuel consumption wise. Mine is having manual transmission and I want to see if I could fix an automatic gearbox instead. I think it's like having some driving assistance while driving. Has anybody done this mod? What are the things I should look into regarding this? Do you suggest any matching gearbox, how should the wiring go? Would it need a different ECU may be? Thanks in advance guys!
