So I know BJJ is a normally male dominated martial art. I’m as small woman (5’1 106lbs). I have some concerns about how women may be treated because of their sex. My husband is joining with me so I’m feeling a little relieved that he will be there with me. But, that doesn’t mean dudes aren’t going to be too rough with me or mistreat me out side because of my gender. What should I expect and how should I present myself to prevent things. I apologize this isn’t a very well worded post. 😅 I appreciate any advice. Thank you!

Edit: Hey guys, just wanted to update on my first few days. The gym I’m at is freaking amazing. The teacher is great. He’s through and manages to give everyone some advice at some point throughout the night. I had a gi day and two nogi days. I knew it was gonna be hard, but man I’m really freaking exhausted after each session. I’ve never pushed my body this hard in my life. Everyone is really nice. The first day I kinda was bothered by the fact that everyone was treating me like I was glass, but the next time I communicated that I’d like people to go harder. He happily said “so you want the smoke?” I didn’t regret saying yes. It’s been a blast so far. I’ve been told I’m quick so I think that’s helped me a bit. I need to work on holding my breath. I find myself suddenly gasping for air during the rolls. It’s been interesting being paired with men twice my size sometimes. Today I managed to tap two other white belts, one was a dude a little over twice my size. That felt good. I’m happy to say I’m making some progress, even if it’s slow. My aim is to get 1% better every time I go in. Anyway, I’m gonna end the update. None of my worried really came to fruition so I’m thankful. Thank you all for your advice! It was super helpful having that going in to it.
