I'm confused about the Guide to Modern Firearms

So in core BESM 4, they make a big deal about how enhancements and limiters don't change cost so....
In the Chiappa M6 X-Caliber there's the regular gun build with just the 12 gauge listed as level as 6(3) and points as 12. Fine, no confusion there, but the .22 goes on and adds level as 2 (1) and points as 2(1) rather than 4...
It's worse with the Power Variation (which has several asterisk entries I don't know what the asterisk is, in addition to several parenthetical costs as noted) and Alt Munitions (where all but the features and the main 16 point weapon have parenthetical cost tweaks)
so um... how does that work?
