Hi!
A month ago I found out about my b12 deficiency (my level was 85). They did an IF test that was negative - though I've since learnt that that doesn't mean I don't have absorption issues, although the doctors disagree. I've been on tablets (b12 and iron) for a month and was given a blood test on Monday which according to the doctor showed my b12 back to normal so all treatment should stop! I tried speaking to her yesterday to query why I wasn't given injections and my concerns regarding a false result due to supplementing. And also my concerns re my pins and needles (almost constant now). She was very dismissive so I spoke to another doctor today who was much more willing to listen and admitted that she wasn't aware of the possibility of a false b12 reading while supplementing and said she would research it and look at the guidelines. She was concerned about my pins and needles so is seeing me on Friday. She still seemed rather reluctant to give me injections but I will bring along with NICE guidelines to show her if I have to.
My question is - the doctor today told me that my blood test on Monday showed my current b12 level as being 270. But this doesn't seem all that high to me! Considering I have been on tablets (100mcg daily) for a month. I'm sure I have heard of people who have levels in the 200s (without supplementing) being given injections? Given that alot of that may well not be active b12 that I can't actually use, it suggests to me an absorption issue? Incidentally my iron is also still in the low range of normal so I've been asked to carry on iron for 3 more months. Having them both still quite low after a month of supplementing suggests to me that something isn't right?
What do you guys think?
