Combat confusion

Hey Gaang, My group and I have been enjoying the system so far, especially the way that it incorporates roleplaying in the mechanics for healing and advancement. However we've been having a bit of trouble wrapping our heads around aspects of the combat.

We've played both DnD and Genesys and aren't afraid of theater of the mind stuff. However, what is tripping us up is what happens when someone's action in the encounter is to disengage/escape from the others. Or when someone tries to block an enemy off from the rest of the group. How is movement in response to that handled? Are you able to actually advance when you choose Advance and Attack? We've generally gone with it but I'm just a bit confused on that.

Also, regarding NPCs and their attacks during combat, the rules state they take 1 their balance score/value techniques per round. A) can they repeat techniques within the same round? (I haven't had them yet) and B) is their balance score what they are currently at or how far they can go up to? (I've been having it be what they are currently at)
