So I’m rewatching and I noticed something I didn’t see the first time in theaters… When Lo’ak and the others are tied up on the ship and Payakan sees, he seems to throw a fit of inner turmoil. He wants to help but he’s already outcast for taking lives and he swore he’d never do it again, and you can see him struggling with it, but he ultimately decides he doesn’t care what happens to him. He has the ability to help the children and he does what he thinks is right. It’s really good story telling and it broke my heart a bit
