What is your argument for automation "stealing jobs"?
Post Body

I've talked with many people outside of any automation industries and I am always having to defend my stance on "automating everything". A popular scenario is something like this:

"Self driving cars will be awesome, 10 years into it there will be far less accidents, no traffic, and you can do stuff on your commute rather than pay attention to the road."

"But so many people will lose their jobs it's horrible!"

**This can be said for many automated things: waiters/waitresses can be replaced by those order machines (this is happening at many places).

The best analogy I've heard was the invention of the tractor, which can do the job of hundreds of people. Sure those hundreds of people lost their jobs, but thousands of new jobs became available because we had other things to spend our time and energy on.

How would you go about giving a really convincing reason to people who see this technology as threatening people's work, rather than improving it?
