Best way to revert to a previous state within drawing?

Hello all. Sorry if the title is confusing. I want to know what's the best method to save a drawing as is, making changes to the drawing, and if the changes turn out to be worthless or mistakes I want to be able to revert back to my save state similar to as you would save state in a game emulator so to speak.
Any thoughts?
