Is anyone else bothered when people refer to being autistic as âthe tismâ?
I donât know exactly why it bothers me, but I think itâs because that term is usually used by NTâs on tiktok or instagram commenting on peopleâs post usually saying âI think you got a little bit of the tismâ, usually in a negative way. First you canât be a little bit autistic, you either are or not, second itâs usually a way to make fun of someone that is different or âquirkyâ, third I feel like if its not NT people saying it, itâs the self dxers that say that because they literally get all their information and dialogue from tiktok.
For me it gives the same vibe as people calling being autistic âacousticâ which really really bothers me because again itâs usually used in a negative way or again to make fun of someone, it also bothers me because it makes autism or autistic seem like a dirty word which I really donât like.
I donât know I could be the only one that is bothered by it? I guess it just kinda feels like a pet name or trendy slang for something that isnât a trend, I wish I could find better words to describe why I donât like it but it just kinda rubs me the wrong way, why canât you just say autism or autistic? Itâs like saying âI got some of that polarâ talking about being bipolar or âI got that phreniaâ talking about schizophrenia which to me is pretty offensive and just sounds like itâs making fun of it.
Would love to know how others feel and Iâm open to hearing why you call autism âthe tismâ if youâre someone who does.
Edit: it was brought to my attention that I shouldnât refer to non autistic people as neurotypical and to use allistic, or non autistic instead, I want to apologize for using neurotypical, I was diagnosed recently and have only heard people using neurotypical so I was under the impression that was the correct terminology to use, I have never heard of the term allistic before so I am going to educate myself better and use that from now on. Iâm so sorry for saying neurotypical and will not continue saying that when referring to non autistic people, I will also continue to educate myself on what is right or wrong but that can sometimes be difficult for me as it seems everyone has varying opinions.
