My SO and I have recently taken over guardianship of his autistic adult son, who only has very few types of safe foods that he will eat; those would be hashbrowns, restaurant, french fries, spiral mac & cheese, New York brick oven pizza, chocolate milk, lemonade, chocolate candy, Oreo cookies, potato chips, and Gatorade. Outside of those things I don’t know that he eats absolutely anything else. I have asked his dad on occasions if he eats any other kinds of food, but the only other thing she’s mentioned that his son has eaten in the past is chicken nuggets, and he doesn’t eat those if you anymore. I’ve never had to deal with anyone with such an extreme aversion or refusal to try other food options that are available in my life, and my son is also on the spectrum yet has never really had this problem for the most part. I want to know if anybody has any advice on how to encourage him to broaden the types of foods he eats, because eating a bunch of junk food or carbs. Every day of your life is completely unhealthy and realistically and affordable.
I know, I’m gonna have some flack from some people who have similar aversions to different types of foods and also have safe foods, but there has to be a common ground in which we can achieve having a more balanced diet for him. I am open to any advice on how to go about this with my SS.
