My 6yo is distracted by EVERYTHING. She cannot focus on ANYTHING unless it’s her TV shows or her Switch. I feel like in the morning I need to take away every single possible interesting item from her view just so she can put socks on.
She is autistic and in the past year has become much more aware of her surroundings and independent. We want to encourage her independence and she is fully capable of doing most things on her own, but sometimes she decides she wants to go get dressed on her own and comes back down half an hour later in underwear having completely forgotten what she needed to do.
Meanwhile we’re (Dad and I) are getting frustrated, she gets annoyed that we’re frustrated, and if we take her interesting things away from her to get the task done (like a magazine, a toy she found, a hair clip, literally anything) then she gets mad and cries and refuses to do anything. As you can imagine mornings before school are especially tough, and we have to wake her up at 6:30 am to catch the bus at 7:30. If we let her sleep any later she literally would not be able to do anything in time for the bus.
When can we get her assessed?
Her dad also has ADHD, he was diagnosed at 8 yrs old. We have implemented charts with stickers, a rewards system, all kinds of things. It’s just getting worse.
In the uk they usually like to wait until they are 8 or in primary 3. My son was just diagnosed and he's 7 in July. He is also autistic he was diagnosed at 4. It just depends on how much it is impacting their lives and those around them
Thank you we are starting off low as well 10mg of medikinet xl as he has both types of adhd wee soul
