Hi everyone.

First time posting here...my daughter (age 4)is mildly autistic and has had some trouble toileting. She's getting better but there have been a bunch of UTIs that now have resulted in antibiotic resistance.

The new medication is unfortunately cherry flavour....for some horrible reason it comes in other flavours in other countries but not here.

It's an oral syringe and about 2 teaspoons worth. She detests it, kicking, screaming won't go near it. I've tasted it myself... it's pretty bad.

Tried putting it with chocolate milk, this worked for one day only and no longer. The infection went to her kidney as a result, they kept her 4 days on IV antibiotics and released us...giving us a script for the same cherry medicine....

Any tips, tricks would be highly appreciated. No rewards or bribes seem to work, she hates it passionately.

Update:

We are out of hospital, and have an alternative medicine (capsules) which I am mixing powder with strawberry milk.

I've learned how to force a swallow when she's completely refusing. What worked was keeping the syringe between her teeth so she can't spit (instead of side of mouth), and going to back of her throat. Takes 5-15 seconds and we get a swallow from her. Nurse said gently massaging the front of throat can help get a swallow reflex but with just myself that isn't possible.

On an even more positive note, smearing honey on the outside of the syringe has yielded fantastic results, she today asked "does it have honey?" and opened her mouth ready for it.

The above may help with cherry flavour again later but only time will tell.
