Context: I work at a fitness center, front desk, opening shift, pre-dawn, and am the only staff in the building at this time. This happed very shortly after opening, and was my first customer interaction of the day. I had 1 hour of sleep and a lot on my mind, so while I seem to be performing my job functions so far, I'm not confident in my cognitive ability right now. (Also one of my quirks is I use "big words" when I'm exhausted. Just go with it.)
The customer: a regular I'm reasonably friendly with, but we don't always communicate well, and I haven't figured out why. But it has never caused friction, just awkwardness. I'll call him Jason.
Jason comes in just as I'm sitting down with my first coffee. He checks in, then asks to buy a tee shirt. I have to ask him to repeat himself a few times just because I'm not sure if he is asking to buy a shirt, or just asking a question about the shirts. Great start. There's another point of confusion about payment, where he payed with a $50 (which would have resulted in getting change all in small bills and quarters) then changed his mind and paid in exact change, no problem for me either way.
Then this happened while I finished ringing up:
Jason: indistinct words I can't make out "...a hoodie"
Me: "I'm sorry, what was that?"
Jason: "Especially if I want to wear a hoodie"
Me: (still not sure if this is small talk or if it's something I need to respond to) "Is that a question?"
Jason: "yes."
Me: "What's the question?"
Jason: "I said, this one is a good size for if I want to wear a hoodie."
Me (trying very hard to figure out which part of that could be a question): "I'm sorry, what's the question?"
Jason: repeats himself
Me: "was that a question?"
Jason: "I don't know"
Me: "What kind of information do you want?"
Jason: "I was just saying..." goes on to repeat himself again
Me: "I don't think that's a question. I'm sorry, I'm just trying to figure out what you need from me right now."
Jason: mumbles something I can't really decipher and proceeds to his workout
I'm reading it over now and I'm pretty sure he wasn't asking a question. But he said "yes" when I asked, and I am extremely sleep deprived. So... anybody else wanna take a crack at it?
