Hi everyone
I’m looking for some advice on systems, routines, schedules or rituals that keep people physically and mentally well.
I was diagnosed with autism earlier in the year after 2 years of really severe autistic burnout that left me unable to work properly (but still having to because capitalism lol).
I’ve just started a new job which is intense for anyone but for autistic people it is harder as I feel I absorb all the energy around me. Also I am having to commute 1 hour each way on public transport 3-4 times per week. My new manager is aware I’m autistic but isn’t very supportive (mainly because she doesn’t understand it) and she’s already said to me whether this company is the right one for me (after I got the flu 3 weeks after starting the job). She is in the process of speaking to HR to get some advice on reasonable adjustments. I don’t want to quit this job because it took me 2 years to get it and the pay is good and I do like the company and the actual work I am doing.
Outside of this keeping up with life and wellbeing I find really hard. When do I make food to take to the office or avoid cooking dinner late at night? How do I keep up with friends especially when in a big city they live 45mins away. How do I maintain my energy and not just need to sleep or rest all the time because I’m so exhausted or get sick.
I already see a private therapist but she helps mainly with trauma and how do I feel opposed to practical solutions to every day life.
I am also on a waiting list for occupational therapy in my area but the healthcare system in my country is nearly non existent and my private healthcare through work explicitly states it doesn’t cover anything related to autism.
Many thanks in advance!
TL;DL - what do you do to manage your life and keep yourself well whilst working an in person office job 3-4 times per week?
