I hate driving but want to live in a rural area

Post Body

I am F21 self diagnosed autistic, and I hate driving. I have had my learner’s permit for about 5 years but I stopped driving around 3 years ago because of an accident. I was a passenger of a vehicle that rear ended another at 70km/hr and I cannot get the impact feeling out of my head, so whenever I’m in a car I can get very anxious. Despite all of this I have always dreamed of living on a little farm and I am now terrified that my fear will basically ruin my life. My special interest has always been horses and without the ability to drive I haven’t been able to be around them in a long time, it physically hurts to be away from them and I don’t want to live without my joy forever.

If anyone has experience with other forms of transportation or places to live that accept horses as transportation I would be very very grateful. I keep trying to plan for the future but driving seems to be a big issue. I’m in Canada if that helps!

TLDR: I am terrified of driving but I want to live in a rural area where it seems to be a requirement. Any other options are very much appreciated 🧡

The struggle is real. I have been driving for 20 years now, and it still makes me anxious. Driving is the most dangerous thing most drivers do each day. But, living in a rural area by yourself without the ability to drive is a bad idea. Depending on where you are in Canada, the weather without a vehicle could keep you in the house for months at a time.

The only place I know that doesn't do cars is Mackinac Island in Michigan. https://www.mackinacisland.org/blog/history-of-cars-er-horseless-carriages-on-mackinac-island/

That said, take your time. I would encourage you to work on it. If the main reason you didn't pass before was that there were new people in your car, practice driving around with new people in your car. Drive your friend and their S.O. to dinner or whatever.

I got my driver's license my last year of college. It just takes us longer to do some things, and that is alright.
