Why is it that since I started actively unmasking 2 years ago, it's harder to mask?

I was a late diagnosed girlie (at 21, am now 24). Diagnosed with many mental illness by therapists before seeing a therapist who suggested seeing a neuropsychologist specialist because she highly suspected autism so I saw a neuropsychologist who diagnosed me and was surprised I wasn't diagnosed sooner. I've been trying to actively unmask since then to embark this journey of being authentically me, and accommodating myself etc. My partner is the best and helps me tremendously. But unmasking a lot had made it SO hard to mask, and when I mask I end up so overwhelmed and have meltdowns. People think I am changing but this is not the case. This is ME.
