Recommendations on perfume for male ?

never use perfume before and never have issue with smells of my body (just clean and nothing i guess lol)
wonder how critical perfume it is in term of socializing ?
as read quite a few post about dating, hanging out and all say "wear cologne" for male.
and if it's really that critical, where shall i start ?
