[Pitchfork News] model-putrid: Why I won't apologise

Post Body

I was disappointed to hear of the recent news that a narrow plurality of the House of Representatives (with 3 government MPs not voting) voted to censure me for my recent comments, but I won't be apologising for the actions that have so inspired the ire of the opposition.

There were three things that were listed as the reason for my censure. I'll address the one that I don't really think anyone cares about first -- "showing a general disregard for parliamentary procedures and basic civility towards members". Yep, I don't really care for parliamentary procedures all that much, and I won't be civil to those who I genuinely believe are harming our country. Neither will CPA leader 12MaxWild, who, in his response to this censure motion, called me "vile", "disgusting", "sadistic", "bottom-feeding scum", and suggested I should resign "before someone runs her over with a train out of pure rage".

Unlike the CPA, I do not attempt to cancel those I disagree with, so I won't be trying to censure him for these comments -- but I think it's revealing that he can claim to care about "basic civility towards members" yet say all these things about members of Parliament he politically disagrees with.

The other two things are a bit more substantive, however, so I'll address them one by one. The first is "publicy (sic) remarking that victims of the Hunter Valley and Sydney floods should ""suck it up""". And yes, I did say that. I also said after this motion was proposed that "residents of the Hunter Valley and Sydney are nasty, whiny, entitled little bitches and this country would be a much better place if they had all died in the floods." And I stand by that.

I do not care for the Hunter Valley or Sydney. They are not the people I represent. I represent the people of Gippsland. I do not expect the people of the Hunter or Sydney to have any care what happens in Gippsland -- why would they? We're a world away from them. I am of course, despite my hyperbolic language, in favour of appropriate flood relief being provided to these communities, but quite frankly I won't be spending any time on it when there are more pressing issues to deal with in my own Gippsland community. Hunter Valley and Sydney residents have their own committed local members who do a fantastic job of advocating for the area -- why exactly should it be my job to care?

But perhaps the most concerning section of this censure motion is the second section, where I am condemned for "remaking (sic) ""political violence and assassinations are abhorrent, that we can agree on. I am as repulsed by that as I am by many of the late Shinzo Abe's views. He is not a man to mourn, and I apologise for my earlier expressing of condolences""". I entirely stand by this statement -- I think it is a nuanced summary of my thoughts on Shinzo Abe's assassination. It is abhorrent that he was assassinated in such a way, and political violence should never be tolerated -- but some of Shinzo Abe's views were truly horrific. I cannot bring myself to mourn his death.

To the CPA, however, this may as well have been holding a gun to the man's head and shooting him myself. Newly-elected MP for Capricornia SpecificDear901 claimed I "quite literally seemingly tried to justify an assassination of a democratic leader of a democratic nation", and that I was "fully detached from reality".

But what were some of the views of Abe? He publicly denied that Japan had forced women into sex slavery during World War 2, and visited the Yasukuni Shrine numerous times throughout his life, which honours many senior Japanese war criminals. Abe was a hard-right nationalist extremist -- while I can tolerate reasonable political disagreement, these views sicken me and I think that they would sicken most reasonable Australians and Gippslanders.

No-one deserves to be killed, and that includes Shinzo Abe. But by including my statement about Shinzo Abe in this motion to censure me, the CPA is either showing incredible ignorance of the life Abe led and the principles he advocated for, or is signalling that the views Abe advocated for were simply not that abhorrent. So I ask the Commonwealth Party -- do you think it is reasonable to expect me to mourn a man who refused to acknowledge Japanese war crimes and glorified the perpetrators of those horrific crimes?

I won't hold my breath waiting for an answer.
