To whom it may concern,
Myself and many in the local community have been deeply distressed by the latest news that a car has once again driven off the edge of Walhalla Road, falling into Stringers Creek. While it is presently unclear if there have been any fatalities, this tragic incident comes only two weeks after a 19-year old man died in an almost identical incident on the same stretch of Walhalla Road, with three others injured.
This section of Walhalla Road poses a constant danger to residents and visitors. It is not protected by a road safety barrier, and given the steep drop, it only takes a very minor driving error to plunge off the side of Walhalla Road. Combine that with the already poor conditions of winter, when visibility can often be poor and the roads can be wet and slippery, and you have a recipe for disaster.
This cannot continue. One more avoidable death or injury on Walhalla Road is too many. That is why I am writing today to implore Regional Roads Victoria to install protective barriers on the section of Walhalla Road near Stringers Creek where so many accidents have occured. The recent successive incidents illustrate the necessity to act now, in order to prevent any further losses of human life.
Sincerely,
model-putrid, Gippsland-based Senator and Minister for Infrastructure, Regional Development, and Cities
