A sign at the new station named for the ex-PM.
An emotional model-putrid commemorated the life and achievements of model-slater today at an opening event for the new Slater railway station, declaring the late Prime Minister "an Australian hero" in a speech today.
The station opens alongside stations at Koroit and Port Fairy today, built as part of the Port Fairy Rail Revival, which extended the Warrnambool line to its prior terminus in the coastal town of Port Fairy. The Port Fairy terminus was closed in 1977, with a freeway built along part of its reservation from Warrnambool to Koroit. The new line now sits opposite the freeway.
While the Port Fairy line will presently only be served by the few return services that travel to Warrnambool, the Regional Rail Revival project, which is to be funded gradually over five years, will see the Port Fairy line duplicated, and new VLocity trains purchased to allow for 20 minute frequency to Port Fairy.
The new Slater railway station is located in the Warrnambool suburb of Dennington, at the corner of Raglan Parade and Drummond Street. Despite model-slater having little connections to Dennington or the Warrnambool area, the unorthodox naming decision was announced at the time to "honour Australia's biggest fairy" as part of the Port Fairy Rail Revival.
Speaking outside the new station, which becomes the third to serve the city of Warrnambool, Attorney-General and rail advocate model-putrid said "not only is this new station and line a great opportunity for Port Fairy and Warrnambool residents to gain access to better job opportunities, and not only does it make it easier for residents to commute without a car, but this station specifically allows us to honour an Australian hero -- former Prime Minister model-slater."
She continued, stating "many Australians, including myself, are still grappling with the immense loss of model-slater. He died doing what he loved. He was a fighter, he was fearless, he was a friend, he was always fair in his decisions, but most importantly, he was a fag, and he paved the way for so many others like him in public office. The Slater railway station will serve as a permanent memorial to his life and achievements, and will allow us all to remember a man who gave his life to the Australian people in service of a better world."
model-slater passed away in November last year, following complications relating to cardiac arrest and Nicki Minaj.
