The Australian and federal governments have jointly agreed to cooperate in the Maffra Rail Revival, which will see trains restored to six central Gippsland towns, improving access to services, jobs, and opportunities for local residents. The Maffra Rail Revival is to be fully funded by the federal government, who are committing $164.63 million for the completion of the Maffra Rail Revival in the upcoming budget.

The old Maffra railway line will be rebuilt along its former path, branching off from the Gippsland line at Traralgon to pass through the towns of Glengarry, Toongabbie, Cowwarr, Heyfield, Tinamba, and Maffra, before meeting up with the Gippsland line just outside of Stratford. All six towns mentioned will recieve new state-of-the-art railway stations, and additional platforms will be refurbished/constructed respectively at Traralgon and Stratford.

Three dual-car VLocity trains have also been purchased to run a shuttle service between Traralgon and Stratford, which will enable trains to service each station on the line once every 40 minutes. With crossover loops to be constructed at every station, trains will be capable of terminating and originating at any station on the line in the event of track disruptions. The continuity with the Gippsland line also opens up the possibility of running services to Bairnsdale via the new line.
