Following the announcement of upgrades to the Swan Hill line on Thursday by the federal government, Attorney-General and Senator model-putrid today visited the Mallee town of Lake Boga to speak to local residents. model-putrid has been a key advocate for these changes, which will see three new railway stations constructed in the regional towns of Lake Boga, Mitiamo, and Mystic Park.
Speaking near the site of the future station, the Senator promised that "once our government's budget is passed, trains will start stopping here within 90 days", to cheers from the small crowd in attendance. She told the audience that "the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have been widespread and hugely detrimental on regional communities. But by investing in rail, we are ensuring that regional communities can build back better. When the train calls here at Lake Boga, so will jobs, opportunities, and economic growth."
The Senator went on to add that future investments in regional rail will be coming in the next budget, saying that "I've been working with many, many very smart rail people...more communities, all across regional Victoria, will get their trains back in the budget. The rails that were stolen by the bastard Kennett will be brought back. Now is the time for it - the country is reeling from the pandemic and is in its hour of need. We will deliver!"
Her fiery language appeared to resonate with residents. Cheryl, a Lake Boga resident, told Pitchfork News that "it's about bloody time for the trains to come back! They should never have been cut in the first place, I tell you. I'm excited to be able to take the train down to the city again - this government's got my vote for sure." Local business owner Steve was also pleased by the Senator's visit, saying that "I've never seen any politician bother to come down here. It's great to know that someone in Canberra cares about our community."
The construction of Lake Boga railway station will cost $4.3 million, and when constructed, the station will feature indoor seating, a V/Line ticket office, and 25 parking spots. The station will be serviced by Swan Hill line trains. As of 12 December 2021, the Swan Hill line currently recieves 14 weekly services.
