dyljam MP Statement on National Anthem
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Today, the Prime Minister broke Australian democracy. He ignored the will of the Australian people in a nationwide ballot, and in doing so he effectively declared himself an autocrat, above the Australian public.
In the plebiscite to change our national anthem, 53% of respondents chose 'I Am Australian' as our new national song. This was a song chosen by the people, to represent the people. It was the result of a lengthy, impassioned, positive campaign to allow Australians to decide whether they wanted Advance Australia Fair as their national anthem, or an alternate song. But this campaign was not just one to decide upon a particular anthem, rather it was a campaign for Australian democracy.
When the Socialist Government changed the national anthem to 'Waltzing Matilda' in what was an iniquitous move without any public consultation, it was rightfully condemned. The United Democratic Government subsequently embarked on an undertaking to give the Australian public the opportunity to decide what song the national anthem should be. This bill was defeated, until it was picked up by the SDP.
For this Liberal National Government to so brazenly ignore the will of the Australian people, and in doing so disregard democracy, is an absolute outrage of the highest degree. Such a shameful move ought to be rebuked. As such, I am willing to support a motion of no confidence in this government, or submit such a motion should another member of parliament wish to second it.
We must not let such a contemptible act go unpunished. We must always protect our democracy, and in doing so, the will of the Australian people.
