FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
--
Leader of the United Democratic Party and Member for Dension, u/dyljam, today commented on the incident unfolding off the Gladstone coast.
"Yesterday evening we received word that an extremely concerning environmental disaster is unfolding off the Gladstone coast. An oil tanker has struck a sandbar, which has resulted in a significant amount of crude oil being released into the ocean."
"This event is highly concerning for several reasons. Firstly, and perhaps most obviously, this oil spill will cause devastation to local marine flora and fauna. Secondly, we are aware that local towns are reporting pollution in their water supply. And thirdly, the local seafood industry in the Gladstone region is likely to be significantly impacted."
"I acknowledge the statements by the government already made. I am aware that the Australian Maritime Safety Authority has been dispatched to rescue the crew on the ship, and begin the clean up of the oil spill. Of course, I welcome this announcement."
"I also acknowledge that the Department of Health is providing medical aid and assistance to local communities. However I strongly disagree with the Minister for Health's statement that 'the current government response is more than adequate'. This is simply incorrect. I welcome the government's work thus far, however these actions must be the absolute minimum that we expect of our government in such a situation."
"I understand that the Prime Minister has promised to introduce legislation to increase punishments for companies which engage in significant environmental damage. I note that the 'polluter pays' principle is a basic economic concept and I would support reasonable legislation which works to protect our environment and minimise the risk of pollution."
"I urge the government to continue to clean up this spill, and ensure that the damage to local communities is minimised."
