The blockade of the Port of Newcastle, despite heavy political repression, was a success.
Sent by Youmaton and her allies in the CLP, the police descended like a stampede of thugs eager to crack skulls. They had been whipped into a frenzy, likely by the inciting words of the new Attorney-General, who has spent every possible media appearance winking to the police as he talks about how important unobstructed flow from the port is...
But despite that, it was inspiring to see the passion from all the people that came out. It was truly, truly something to see. I've been politics for a while now, and really, I've never seen anything so wonderful.
Unfortunately, I was detained -- possibly unlawfully -- under the orders of the Attorney-General, which means I was not arrested. But rest assured I did everything I could to keep people safe, and I intend to follow through on my promises to provide all the legal support they need and to fully fund their legal fees.
That will happen, 100%.
I am excited to see what activism comes next from the incredibly bright and determined young activists who organised such a large and successful protest -- I know they will succeed, and my door is always open to them.
We must turn now to the tragic events at Parliament House. While the PM has been standing up and condemning violence for days, she has saved most of that fervour for the youth protesters. She did not come out hard against these radicalised, far-right protesters, and the end result is the tragic attempted murder of a young boy.
This is a true tragedy, and one Australians must unite to stand against. We must all condemn this absolutely shocking attack, and condemn it with our voices united. I call on the Prime Minister to join me in standing against these radical, right-wing thugs.
