The ANCAP Government's crusade to deregulate every industry has met another roadblock, with two of its signature bills dying in the House.
The propagandistically titled Nuclear Energy (Save Our Grid) Bill was defeated in a 6-7 vote, with half of the crossbench voting against. The Labour-CLP Coalition had led a significant campaign against the Bill -- which would have legalised nuclear energy in Australia -- and their disciplined whip meant the Bill went down in flames.
Simultaneously, the Government lost another vote on the Pleasurable Services Amendment (Removing Restrictions) Bill. The Pleasurable Services Bill -- dubbed "the Pimps and Johns Bill" by MP For Canberra TheSensibleCentre -- would've stripped away regulation from the sex work industry, leaving workers at the mercy of pimps.
In what is a devastating humiliation, the ANCAP Government was unable to secure a single crossbench vote for the Pleasurable Services Bill -- signalling a complete breakdown of negotiation. Indeed, many political observers suspect the Government is simply throwing Bills at the wall to see what sticks, and do not negotiate with the crossbench at all.
While governments theoretically command a majority in the House, and the passage of government legislation there is typically a formality, the ANCAP Government has thus far been marked by its repeated failures to shepherd legislation through the lower chamber.
Even legislation necessary to the functioning of the government, like the Budget, has been defeated by the House. While some experts believe this should've led to a change of government, as the Prime Minister can no longer command supply, Independents have thus far been unwilling to support a Jordology Labour Government.
Maverick MP TheSensibleCentre -- who recently orchestrated the landslide defeat of Bellman's signature greyhound racing ban repeal Bill -- said it "made sense" the Independents hadn't come over yet.
"There is, quite frankly, nothing we could offer them -- because they know we want to see an election. We think the Australian people should get to make their voices heard now that ANCAP have shown their true colours. But for an Independent, well, an election means they have to get out there and do all that work to campaign. And I'm very sympathetic -- running a campaign without a party behind you is a hard thing to do; I've done it several times, and it's always harder than when you're in a party.
"But at the same time, they should be a little bit more willing to play ball with Jordology. He would make a fine Prime Minister, and he's going to end up Prime Minister at the next election. And if the Independent Member for Brisbane won't vote for a Jordology Government, then maybe the Labour Member for Brisbane will. These seats aren't as safe as the Independents seem to think they are."
It's a clear signal that the Labour Party -- which is quickly becoming an electoral juggernaut -- is growing tired of the intransigence from some on the crossbench.
The Government, too, is evidently having issues with the crossbench -- hence the repeated failure of their Bills.
