Welcome to the AusSim week in review on the AusSim radio network. I'm Jefferson Dufflecoat.
Another big week in politics has gone by the wayside as spring passes into the long hot summer. For the Government it has been a mixed bag. It gained a major victory with their Gambling Advertising Restiction Bill successfully getting through the Senate but also suffering a major setback with the controversial Greyhound Racing Prohibition Bill failing to get the numbers to pass. Prime Minister Dyljam had made overtures about using his power to request the Senate undertake a fresh vote, but with the threat of High Court challenges if that came to pass, the Government appears doomed to have to reintroduce the bill into the House first before trying again.
A lot of questions will be asked as to why key senators in the government were absent from the vote on the Greyhound bill, thus allowing the bill to be defeated. Given the government was already on shaky ground with their tenuous alliances with Key independents Maiq and General_Rommel, who's supply deal with the Government was built on the Greyhound Bill being passed, this is an unwelcome distraction in a time when the Government would prefer to be focusing on selling their upcoming budget, General_Rommel remains confident however that the bill will be passed once readmitted and as such will keep confidence in the Government.
The opposition for its part has been keeping a low profile, instead letting the governments own problems be the cause of their downfall. Leader of the opposition Bellman no doubt still licking his wounds after his own controversial bill to ban abortion was soundly defeated at the first hurdle in the House.
There was a victory however for their crossbench ally, showstealer1829. The member for Sturt's long attempt to pass his E-Sports Trial bill finally getting the support of both houses and gaining royal assent, allowing E-Sports athletes and organisations to receive funding from the Australian Institute of Sport for the next two and a half years at least.
showsteaker1829: "This is a great day for all our young athletes in this new digital medium, no longer will they have to train with the burden of wondering how they will survive with rent, food, schooling and the like hanging over their heads. I look forward to this new era leading us to be able to cheer on our best and brightest on the world stage and I thank my colleagues in Parliament for seeing the good that this bill will do for those young men and women"
showstealer1829 there, giving a speech at the Australian E-Sports championships being held this weekend.
Elsewhere in AusSim. A new party released their manifesto onto the public, the Social Democrats party led by former Socialist party member CSID, came out with its plan for the future of the company, citing plans for green energy, nuclear power and an Universal Basic Income amongst many other ideas for the future should they be given the chance. Whether this will result in a boost for them or whether this will be largely forgotten come election time is still too soon to say but adding another party to an already crowded political scene seems foolhardy at best, especially with limited prospects in terms of gaining membership.
Turning to the upcoming week and AusSim will be heading back to the polling booths with a referendum on the new Constitution scheduled to take place on Monday, the weird timing has led to fears that turnout could be lower than expected but the referendum is still expected to pass comfortably with no real discerning opinions coming out in argument against the new thoughts so far, although there have been rumblings of a possible High Court challenge from the Bellman United party in the hopes of gaining a early election, perhaps a shrewd move given the general disarray of the government in the past week, but one most constitutional experts agree is doomed to fail should they go ahead with it.
Meanwhile questions will continue to be asked of the Government given its somewhat unreliable voting record, especially in the Senate as of late, many callers into "Talkback with Terry Towelling" on the AusSim Radio Network have voiced dissatisfaction with the Government, especially from those in rural communities, who feel the Democrats have "sold them out to cater to the whims of the Greens". Certainly the pressure will ratchet up on Prime Minister Dyljam to put the confidence of his government to the test by calling an early election should the referendum on the constitution pass.
It all makes for another fun filled week in politics and AusSim Radio Network will be there to cover it all.
