https://www.recipetineats.com/easy-yeast-bread-recipe-no-knead/ Hey all, just wanted to share a recipe I came across to make some awesome bread- I ran some numbers and assuming all ingredients are bought specifically to make bread, it comes to around $1 a batch, give or take depending on if you use a little more or less than what the recipe says. My last batch of two loaves and two burger buns (all made all at once using this recipe) weighed in at around 1.15kg of bread- significantly better than the usual 700g loaves you buy at more than triple the cost. I started calculating water cost as well, but it genuinely would not matter to factor this in unless you're baking hundreds of loaves. Even then, it would add a few cents into the overall cost lol.
Now, a quick disclaimer- I dropped out of maths in year 10 (over a decade ago now lmao) so I may have made some errors. However, regardless of the maths, I genuinely believe it is significantly better both socially and health-wise to make your own bread than buy from a store. Bread is one of the easiest things to make, but you can get as complicated with it as you like (there are specifics on the recipe page). This particular recipe is for "Artisanal" bread, made in a dutch oven- but I've been putting my dough into bread tins and baking that way with excellent results.
Before I baked my own bread, I'd spend anywhere from $5 to $15 a week on bread for myself and my family, depending on what we were doing for meals. This bread lasts for about a week, but can be frozen for up to 3 months if needed.
Happy baking!
