The following is a transcript of a Channel Seven News report aired Friday afternoon, in which beloved veteran news presenter Rick Ardon tails a Socialist Party door knocker in the working class suburb of Orelia.
Rick Ardon: We're out in Orelia today, a working class suburb in Perth's south, and we're door knocking with the Socialist Party. Margaret, a local resident and public school teacher, is one of the door knockers. She's 62 years old, and has worked at a local public school for almost 40 years.
The camera cuts to Margaret, an elderly woman clutching a handful of Socialist Party leaflets bearing the face of Jack Trask, the Socialist Party candidate for Pearce.
Margaret: I joined the Socialist Party just a few months ago after they secured me and every public school teacher in Western Australia the first wage rise we have received in a decade. So did most of the teacher's at my school. Nobody has stood up for us before like Trask did.
The camera cuts to Margaret approaching a residence and knocking on the door. A middle aged man greets her at the threshold. A small dog yaps at the man's side, but calms when Margaret leans down and gives it a gentle pat on the head. The man smiles.
Margaret: Hello, sir. My name is Margaret, and I'm a member of the Socialist Party. We're running in the upcoming election, and I wanted to ask if you're considering voting Socialist?
Resident of Orelia: Hi Margaret, I think I already know you. You taught my son Mark. You were one of his favourite teachers.
Margaret: Mark [Named bleeped out for privacy reasons]? Yes I remember him. He was a great student. How is he doing these days?
Resident of Orelia: Great, he's off at ECU studying Environmental Science.
Margaret: That is great to hear, I'm sure he has a bright future ahead of him.
Resident of Orelia: I'm very proud of him. Anyway, what's all this about then? You're out here campaigning for the Socialists?
Margaret: Yep, that's exactly what I'm doing. Are you considering voting for us?
Resident of Orelia: Ahh, I'm not sure. I've always voted for the Liberals, but I dont really know much about politics. All seems a bit [Expletive bleeped out] to me.
He laughs nervously, as if ashamed of this revelation.
Margaret: What made you decide to support them?
Resident of Orelia: Well, my father was a big fan of them, and he always voted for them. I guess I just followed in his footsteps.
Margaret: Well, here is a pitch for you. The Socialist Party delivered $35 billion dollars to public schools just like [School name bleeped out for legal reasons]. That's really the reason I am out here campaigning for them. They have given us the resources we need to help deliver quality education to kids like Mark. They genuinely care about people like us and want to ensure that all our children, not just the sons and daughters of the wealthy, receive the best education they possibly can.
Resident of Orelia: [Expletive bleeped out] it. I will give you guys a go.
He takes a leaflet from Margaret.
Resident of Orelia: If you are out here campaigning for them they must be doing something right, and I can't stand that [Expletive bleeped out] 12MaxWild.
The camera cuts back to Rick Ardon.
Rick Ardon: It's clear the Socialist Party has local appeal and a powerful message that is connecting to people in working class suburbs like Orelia. But will it be enough to win them the election? We'll find out on Saturday.
