To show that she cares, Prime Minister TheSensibleCentre is embarking on a nationwide "Listening Tour." This tour takes her all across the nation to listen to the concerns of the common Australians. Today's stop was Perth, where she toured the city and talked to all sorts of common blokes.
In a beautiful local pub, she was asked by a tired office worker, Gary, what the government would do to help ensure workers could continue working from home, now that the pandemic has revealed it is possible for so many.
She smiled impishly and answered. "That's a great question, Gary. You see, the thing is, many bosses are saying 'lockdown is over, it's time to come back to work.' The thing is, we've seen that so many workers are able to work from home. Often, they're more productive! So, in light of that -- and I have to stress that this is not yet official government policy, but is Socialist Party policy -- we have adopted a policy to mandate that all employers offer a work from home option where available.
"And I know to some that may seem unfair. For all the cafe, warehouse, and hospital workers, that might seem unfair, because you're stuck going to work. But for you, we're also going to mandate that employers pay for every minute of the commute, at the same hourly rate as the rest of your day. And that applies if you're cycling, on public transport, or driving. That's right. While commuting to work isn't exactly the same as working, it's damn well necessary to do your work! And of course, this will also incentivise bosses to offer that work from home option.
"We believe in the rights of workers. It is damn important to me that the people who continue to keep this country moving are given proper rights and decent conditions. Now I know there are plenty of people out there making a lot of hay about issues that just don't matter at the end of the day. But I'm out here, and I'm listening, because I want to make sure that this is a government that is fully engaged with the needs of working people. We don't just go off to the ivory halls of Parliament and then lose touch with the common workers of Australia. Some parties do, but not the Socialist Party."
Another bloke in the pub shouts out "I hate the CLP! Please tell us more about why you do too."
TheSensibleCentre has a sensible chuckle at this, and then shakes her head in an endearing manner.
"Look, I don't hate the Country Labor Party. I really don't. We worked productively with them last government and we would be more than willing to work with them again, but I think, in this case -- come on man. That's what we need to be saying. We need to ask where these guys get off. They go off and they say they'll only run for rural electorate and represent rural people. And yet here in Pearce, where the vast majority of the population live here in Perth, we've got CLP candidates regularly standing. And they openly admit that they don't care about anyone in Perth. They're not going to represent you, they're only going to represent people living rural.
"Now, don't get me wrong, we want to represent those people too. But that's the difference between our parties. We are the party for EVERY Australian. You can live in Perth, you can live in the middle of nowhere on your farm, but folks, we love you anyway, we love all of you, and we will work with you on everything. We will work to deliver for you.
"That's what makes the difference between the Socialist Party and our competitors for this race. You've got a party with a proven track record, and the logical successor for an amazing local member that has been on your side and delivered for you. On the other side, we've got a pack of bozos with no plan for Pearce. But we do folks. We have a hashtag Plan for Pearce and we will hashtag Deliver The Plan. That's the difference.
"Come on folks. Together we can make it through this night. Together. We can make a better Australia."
The listening tour then continued on many pub trips, earning TheSensibleCentre the nickname "Bob Hawke but progressive." Amazing.
