Hi. Unfortunately, I'm writing this to you from lockdown, after regional Victoria was placed under stay-at-home orders to protect from COVID-19. Most everyone I've spoken to here in Rosedale isn't happy about the lockdown, but they accept that it is needed for public health. Basically, they handle it like adults.
But unfortunately, our federal Parliament appears to be filled with babies. Last week, we saw them debate a pointless motion over the "mental health impacts of COVID-19 restrictions". Now, don't get me wrong. I don't like having to stay at home. But sometimes in life, you've got to do things that you don't like. If I've got to stay at home for a few weeks so I'm not infected by a deadly virus - I might get bored, but like any sensible adult, I'll put up with it,
But instead, we saw the whining teens of the Liberal Party going off about how hard the lockdown was for them, and COVID-19 isn't that bad, you guys! Now, is this to say that our politicians shouldn't be discussing COVID-19 lockdowns? Of course not. Our politicians should have public health as their top priority during a global pandemic, and health policy should be focused on eliminating COVID-19 as quickly as possible.
But that just makes this motion even worse. In a time when our main focus should be eliminating COVID-19. our politicians were discussing opening the floodgates for the virus and the Delta variant. Because if you're discussing the mental health impact of war while our soldiers are fighting the Nazis, what is your goal?
Ultimately, most Australians know the silliness of this. What upsets me is that it took valuable time from Parliament's busy schedule. This is not just a Liberal problem, either. Do you think that if you elect an SDP or Greens MP, they won't be wasting our time with a motion to commemorate Pansexual Awareness Day?
Sydney and Australia deserve better representation. By electing an independent MP, you will elect someone to serve as a check on the radical instincts of the major parties. Even if they introduce time-wasting bills or motions, I will be there to introduce sensible and common-sense legislation that will help the people of Sydney. Over the next few days, I will keep making the case directly to Sydneysiders that the independent alternative is the best option this by-election. I hope that you are able to seriously consider moderate and nonpartisan governance from the only independent choice.
Thanks for reading
Happy quarantining
