Here's a leaflet advertising this event that goes on social media, etc.
"The coronavirus pandemic has deeply effected the economy of Mildura. While recovery has begun, there are many local businesses in the area that have been forced to close shop. Those are dozens, and maybe even hundreds, of jobs that have been lost as a result. However, there's one key weapon that this government can employ to give Mildura's economy a turbocharge to help us recover from this pandemic.
We need a federal MP who will push for the return of passenger trains to Mildura. It's a service that will provide a link between Melbourne and Mildura that's much more affordable than a flight, and it will bring lots of revenue to the Mildura community. Mildura recieves hundreds of thousands of visitors per year, and a train service will increase those numbers. Given the size of Mildura and our tourist industry, it has the potential to be profitable.
But this isn't about profit. Even if the federal government made a loss on the Mildura passenger service, it would still be worth running. Why? Because our community is struggling. We don't expect to make profits on hospitals and schools, but we pay for those, because they're in the public good. Forcing Mildura residents to either fork out hundreds of dollars for a plane ticket or drive 6 bloody hours if they want to get to Melbourne is unacceptable.
The decision to close down this line that was made in 1993 was not made because it made sense. It didn't, not economically, and not for the Mildura community. Why was it made? For ideology. It was made because Jeff Kennett — the dog cunt — believed in a very toxic ideology, one that looks down on rail services, because they're a collective good. He did not need to make this decision. Hundreds of thousands of Victorians across the state were hurt by this decision that was made not because it was a good idea, but because he personally thought that it was a good idea because of the sick and twisted ideology he believed in.
It's why I haven't run this campaign on some vague abstract idea like gay rights or tax cuts. I've run this campaign on the issues that matter to locals. So let me tell you my plan for restoring passenger services to Mildura. We'll get passenger trains back on the track as soon as possible, and reopen railway stations at St Arnaud, Donald, Birchip, Woomelang and Ouyen. And you know this railway station right here? If you elect me as your local MP, I will do everything I can to ensure that this is as busy as a beehive."
