In the Grafton Country Women's Association rooms, model-amn is meeting with about a couple dozen CWA members. The CWA organisers are recording the names and phone numbers of attendees for contact tracing purposes, with hand sanitisers and masks available. Most importantly, CWA member Dorothea has baked her famous scones for the event.
"Thank you very much for having me here today, ladies. I'm running a senior-focused campaign this election, to bring the problems we, as seniors, face, to Canberra. And you know, I believe in intersectionality. While us ladies do have an advantage in some areas, such as baking delicious scones, we can suffer from discrimination, and when that meets up with the added baggage of being senior, it intersects, increasing the possibility that we will be treated poorly, hence why we believe that specifically elder women should be supported as well.
Women are more likely to be paid less, we're less likely to have full-time jobs, we're more likely to have to stay at home. There was this figure I found out, and I'll be honest, it shocked me- if you're over 60 and you're a single woman, then you have a 34% chance of being in poverty. 34%! Think about that. Because all of this can accumulate, often by the time you're in your old age and you can't work, you haven't had the chance to accumulate wealth, and you have a higher chance of being poor because you're not only a senior, you're a woman.
If you've spent your entire life working, you shouldn't have to spend your best years in poverty. It's stats like this which is why I decided to put my hand up for Parliament, because you know, I've had a gutful. I've had a gutful of hearing stories like this from my friends, and from reading about these statistics, and all I'm able to do is yell at Kochie on Sunrise about it.
That's why I want you to send me to Canberra. Because, you know, I'm just one doddering old pensioner, but maybe if you vote for me, then I'll be able to bring good legislation up there, and even if the major parties vote it down, they'll be taking notes, because they'll see that this message, the message of making senior lives matter, it resonates with a lot of people. Maybe they'll start giving us the attention we deserve. That's why I'm asking for your vote."
