In the Lismore City Hall, model-amn is launching her campaign for Cowper. There is a cap of 100 people, with hand sanitiser available, as well as the name and phone number of attendees recorded. About 60 people are in attendance.

"Hello, my friends. I have decided to run for federal Parliament this election because I believe that senior Australians, the backbone of this country, are not being given a fair go. We are the people who made this country great, yet we are ignored by politicians. During this coronavirus pandemic, it has been our seniors who have been acutely at risk.

According to the OECD, nearly 20% of over-65 Australians live in poverty, which is only slightly less than Israel, which is currently in a state of what is essentially war against the Palestinians! It's more than double Greece's rate of senior poverty. Too many seniors have trouble paying basic utility bills, which can lead to cold homes killing seniors.

You know what would be great? If we could get the government to make sure all of our homes are up to standard when it comes to staying warm, because cold houses are much more likely to kill us than hot weather. About 7% of deaths in the country over 20 years can be attributed to cold weather. If we were able to get the government to properly insulate and seal homes, that would be a godsend for seniors. If we had something like over what they do in Britain, the winter fuel payment, where seniors are given money to help pay their heating bills, that would be a godsend for so many seniors.

But our government won't do it. I don't think they're bad people, but they just have no reason to care about what seniors want, because there's no-one in Parliament standing up for seniors interests. Well, if you elect me, then I promise to stand up for seniors, because senior lives matter. That is the slogan I am running on this campaign -- senior lives matter. It is the message we are trying to bring forward this election, of making seniors issues matter in Canberra.
