TheSensibleCentre flew out to Moncrieff to give a speech in strong support of Doctor. The following is a transcript of the speech:
"Thank you all for coming out here -- it is so heartening to see so many ordinary Australians coming out, responding to our message, understanding that the Labour Party has a plan that works for them -- not the corporate fat cats at the top end of town.
Australia used to be a country of opportunity. Under the watchful eye of the model-slater government, we had an Australia where people were allowed to get ahead when they worked hard and strived for betterment. And ever since the right-wing took power, they've been working without rest to try and destroy the opportunity that this country was built upon.
But that's why Labour is here, working hard to ensure that the forgotten Australians finally have their voice in the hallowed halls of Parliament House. We must believe that Australia can be better than the base instincts of right-wing depravity. We must believe that we can transcend this sick ideology that says Australians don't deserve a fair go unless they're a millionaire.
Australians are looking for a fair go, and they're looking for a fair go at work. We have to spend so much of our lives at work, and if that's going to be the case, then work should be a place that's fair. For too long, the scales have been weighted in favour of the bosses. Well, no more.
The Australian Labour Party is proposing a new deal for our workers. If elected, a Labour Majority Government would deliver the biggest increase in worker's rights in this country's history.
The centre piece of that plan is a four day work week. It's about time that Australian workers get some of their time back. For too long, they've been forced to slog through a five day work week. Even as productivity has dramatically increased, there has been no decrease in time worked. Instead, that increased productivity has been used to fire workers while corporations enjoy an ever increasing rate of profit.
If we were to follow the rate at which productivity has risen, we should see a corresponding decrease in time worked to just 20 hours a week. So the business community should understand that a proposal for a four day work week is already a compromise. We recognise that we can't go down to 20 hours overnight, so this is the first step.
But it is a first step that will give Australian workers the true delight of a four day work week. And that means a three day weekend, a chance for Australians to connect with their families, their friends, and their communities.
Think about what a better Australia we'd have if Aussies got that extra time off. They could use it to volunteer and become an active participant in their communities, reconnecting with the people around them. They could use it to take their family on a picnic, or meet up with friends at the pub.
And it'll be up to individual businesses to decide how they implement this. If they decide that they need to have workers in five days a week, they're welcome to pay them over time. If they need half the workforce in on Monday and half in on Friday, they can do that. They can configure it however they need, as long as they give their workers a well deserved three day weekend.
Because we've earned that. Aussies have earned a four day work week with their hard work and sacrifice. Together, we've built this country into one of the best places to live in the world. Now it's about time we get the time to enjoy it!
That's the other part of our plan: improving access to leave and flexible work. With how much Aussies put in for these corporations, and with how much they profit off the backs of our labour, we should at least be given a bit more time to enjoy the fruits of our labour.
The LNP and the CPA, they wouldn't have it that way. They think you should work every day of your life to make the corporate donors that bankroll their campaigns and donate to their war chest.
We, however, are the party of the ordinary Australians. Not just those that work, but even small business owners -- because the LNP and CPA would like to see our small business owners -- those who run the cafes and the tuck shops -- driven out of business by the monopolising force of large corporations.
That's the thing to remember in this campaign. The LNP and CPA aren't in your corner, they aren't working for you. They are willing to run all over you for the sake of enriching their corporate mates.
Jq here, my good friend Jq, he is a great man. He is a fighter. He has been attacked for leaving the ANCAP Party, but I say we shouldn't condemn him for that, we should celebrate him.
This is a man who recognised he'd made a mistake. He realised that the party he was in was overseeing a series of dramatic cuts to some of this country's most foundational services, that couldn't get a budget passed, and that wasn't interested in governing for Australians, whereas he was. So what did he do? Did he grit his teeth and vote for terrible legislation, terrible legislation that would've impoverished the community and made this country worse?
No, though the LNP and CPA say that's what he should've done. Instead, he had the courage to stand up and do the right thing. He had the courage to say it wasn't okay, and he had the courage to walk across the aisle and join with a party that's interested in supporting Australians and giving them a hand up. If you ask me, that's the kind of thing we need more of in politics.
And that is exactly why we need to reelect my friend here, and elect Labour MPs across the country. That way, we can deliver a country that works for everyone, not just the corporate bosses.
